Now, more than ever, it is essential to understand how to effectively protect yourself, your family, or even your employees from germs and infections. Unfortunately, there is quite a lot of misunderstanding about the type of cleaning we should apply. The terms cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting are sometimes used interchangeably, yet there are significant variations between them. We will help you learn the difference between cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting by exploring these terms individually.

Cleaning

Cleaning is something that most of us avoid doing, yet it is essential for maintaining our living and working spaces. To clean, you must eliminate all visible dirt, dust, and debris. Such things might detract from the appearance of your property, which is why cleaning is so important.

You typically need a cloth with some detergent, cleaning spray, or water to wipe objects down. Vacuuming is another form of cleaning.

When it comes to the types of cleaning, there are weekly cleaning routines as well as monthly and yearly ones. What you will opt for is very subjective and will depend on your habits and needs. When it comes to germs, the process of cleaning does not necessarily remove them. On the other hand, it optimizes subsequent sanitization and disinfection since it provides a clean slate.

Caption: Wiping down your plants is one form of cleaning since it removes the visible dust from them.

Alt-tag: A man wiping a plant with a cloth

Sanitizing

On the other hand, sanitizing is the process of removing a considerable number of germs until the object is safe to use. The safety level depends on what you are cleaning, such as a hospital, school, restaurant, office, or home. It is essential to adequately sanitize to stop the spread of infections. In these challenging times, sanitizing has become second nature. However, we must remain diligent in protecting others.

Sanitizing is done by using harsher products that are able to remove bacteria or germs. Read the label and wear protective gear if needed. Even getting a simple automatic sanitizer dispenser could help you and your employees maintain safety in the workplace. Remember that sanitizing does not mean the same thing as cleaning. Both are equally important for a healthy environment

Disinfecting

And finally – disinfecting. Disinfecting is one of the most reliable ways to stop the spread of infection. It can be even more beneficial than sanitizing since it kills bacteria and viruses. However, remember that it does not clean a surface or remove germs. Places that large groups of people often use should be disinfected accordingly. Your home also needs its own disinfecting routine to secure the health of you and your loved ones.

You can disinfect with harsh chemicals such as bleach and alcohol solutions. Be sure to read the label and understand which cleaning and sanitizing solutions are most appropriate. Additionally, educate yourself on how to use the disinfectant of your choice securely and effectively. Purchase any protective gear like gloves and masks while you are at it. You will most definitely need it while disinfecting your environment. Remember that disinfectants require some time to be activated, so be sure to wait until all germs have been eradicated. Disinfecting can be pretty daunting to do on your own. Hire professional help if you feel you need some assistance with this task.

Why it is important to clean, sanitize, and disinfect

We must do our due diligence to protect ourselves and others. It is essential to take care of our immediate living environment and our workspace to adequately safeguard everyone involved.

Although there is a difference between cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting, these tasks are all interdependent. You cannot possibly disinfect a messy environment. These important tasks should all be crucial in our daily, monthly, and yearly routines and should never be neglected.

You should ensure your space is clean, sanitized, and disinfected beforehand if you are planning a move, for example. Make your health and the health of your loved ones a priority by ensuring that you live in a safe and germ-free place. We understand that cleaning and disinfecting your home before and after the move might seem overwhelming. This is why you should establish a routine and seek assistance if necessary. Cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting your environment should become a joint effort between you and your family. This will lessen the load and instill good habits for your children.

How often should you clean, sanitize and disinfect

You might be asking yourself how frequently you should clean, sanitize and disinfect your place. Unfortunately, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. It depends on a number of factors, such as your routine, free time, how many people you are cleaning up after, and if you are getting any help or not. Furthermore, the location you’re in charge of may have various requirements when it comes to these factors. We hope you now understand the difference between cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting. You may devise your own ideal regimen for these tasks based on the information we provided. However, once you are done, do not forget to use hand sanitizer effectively. Cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting your environment is just half the battle. You must sanitize yourself often to protect anyone you might come in contact with.

Please note that the following comments are a very basic approach to the subject and many may disagree with my terms and definitions. This conversation is welcome and encouraged.

“Cleaning” in its most basic terms is to remove all visible soils.

“Sanitize” has to do with using a “sanitizer” or “disinfectant” to kill up to a certain percentage of microorganisms with the goal of 99.999 percent kill rate on a surface that has usually been “cleaned” prior to applying the product.

“Disinfect” has to do with using an EPA registered disinfectant on a “clean” surface for the prescribed dwell time (5 or possibly 10 minutes) with the goal of 99.9999999 percent kill rate.

“Sterilize” has to do with using an autoclave or other method with the goal of 100 percent kill rate of any microorganisms, including spores. This process is not practical is cleaning an office for obvious reasons and is limited to surgeon and dental tools that use extreme heat for total destruction of any pathogens.

“Microorganism” is any virus, bacterium, mold or other substance that is not visible to the naked eye. Also, can be called germs or pathogens.

“Pathogen” is a microorganism that can infect a person resulting in illness or even death if not treated.

“Clean surface prior to disinfecting” has to do with the reality that most sanitizers and disinfectants are not effective if there is a “soil load” (think dirt, food, grease) that must be removed before the product can be applied. Failure to clean the surface first oftentimes reduces the efficacy of the product.

Check with your distributor and make sure that you are using the correct terms to achieve the desired results.

Hygiene in school canteens depends on factors ranging from personal hygiene of workers to products used for cleaning.

Food regulations are increasingly demanding, but when the pressure for food security meets an audience as susceptible as children, hygiene becomes a priority as well as an obligation.

When it comes to ensuring hygiene in school canteens, many factors come into play, such as the personal hygiene of the monitors and the children themselves, the use of the correct cleaners or the importance of differentiating the spaces from each other.

Next, we present the main factors to take into account to guarantee hygiene in school canteens.

The importance of differentiating spaces
Reception and maintenance of food
Serve food: With or without gloves?
Personal hygiene of the monitors
Disinfectants, always with HA Registry
Nonwoven cloths for drying

The importance of differentiating spaces

It is not the first time we talked about zoning during cleaning. This action consists in detecting which spaces are different from each other, either by the activity that takes place in them or by the type of product and, if they are not compatible, treat them separately during the cleaning tasks.

What we achieve with this is to significantly reduce the risk of cross contamination.

To zoning the cleaning we need tools that allow us to distinguish where we use each brush, cloth or spatula. And for that we will help each other with different colors.

Reception and maintenance of food

Many school canteens work with catering that serves prepared food. In these cases we must check that, upon receipt, the temperature of the food is correct.

For example, if served hot, the temperature of the food should be around 65 ° C since, below this value there is the possibility of bacterial growth.

On the other hand, food is usually received in Gatronorm trays, which must be subsequently sanitized to prevent biofilms from sticking on their surface.

But not only is it enough to control the reception of the food, but we must ensure the same conditions until it is served.

Serve food: With or without gloves?

We have already discussed this issue in other articles and the result is that it is recommended to serve food while avoiding the use of gloves. Yes! Hand hygiene becomes a constant and unqualifiable ritual.

And when we wear gloves, we “stretch” their use too much, putting food safety at risk and often causing cross-contamination problems. In addition, jewelry that jeopardizes food safety is also prohibited.

Monitors and kitchen staff should wash their hands with soap-free soaps, as many foods are sensitive to certain odors. Gojo Mild soap is a good option in these cases.

Personal hygiene of the monitors

The personal hygiene of the monitors plays a key role in preserving food safety. And just as the use of gloves is discouraged, the caps are a mandatory Personal Protective Equipment.

The gowns that the monitors wear must dispense with pockets or other corners that allow the accumulation of particles. And, of course, the gown or shirt worn to accompany children at recess will never be the same as the one worn during the dining room service.

In addition, any type of injury must be properly covered and, in these cases, if deemed appropriate, the use of gloves will be allowed.

Disinfectants, always with HA Registry

The HA Registry guarantees that the disinfectant in question is suitable for use in environments that work with food, but always in the absence of them.

Pre-disinfection step, cleaning will be carried out. In this case, the use of a cleaner or other will be determined by the type of waste to be removed, opting for acidic cleaners for inlays, alkaline cleaners for traces of grease and neutral cleaners for delicate surfaces.

Cleaning and disinfection will be carried out after each service and it will be the company that determines how often thorough cleaning is done.

The cleaning of the bathing area in hospitals should be treated with effective products against germs and with an adequate frequency.

Baths or toilets are commonly known to be one of the spaces that houses a greater number of germs.
In the case of hospital restrooms, in particular, the risk of germination proliferation is even greater. This makes hygiene and disinfection even more important in these spaces.
Thus, in hospitals, nursing homes or medical centers, toilets should be cleaned at least once a day or whenever deemed necessary.

If working with cleaning carts, they must be placed in the entrance blocking the passage. In the same way that happens with the rooms, the entrance of the cars to the zone of the bathroom is prohibited.

Cleaning the walls of bathrooms in hospitals
Cleaning of toilets in hospital bathrooms
Cleaning of showers and bathtubs in hospitals
Cleaning of shower screens in hospitals
Cleaning shower curtains in hospitals
Cleaning the floors of bathrooms in hospitals

Cleaning the walls of bathrooms in hospitals
The walls of the bathrooms will be sanitized once a month always from top to bottom and respecting from cleaner to dirtier.
First, a scrub will be applied (never cleaned dry) with a bactericidal detergent.
The rinse will be done with the double bucket system (one bucket for scrubbing with the cleaning solution and another for rinsing with clean water).
Drying will help us to prevent the proliferation of germs that sometimes arise from humid environments.

Cleaning of toilets in hospital bathrooms

The toilets of hospitals, nursing homes or medical centers will be sanitized a minimum of twice a day.
As with all other surfaces, cleaning will be done wet and inside out. To ensure proper disinfection, we will use a non-corrosive liquid bactericide.

Following this line, the material chosen for cleaning should avoid scratches and be exclusive for cleaning and disinfection of toilets.

Thus, we will avoid cross contamination problems.

Cleaning of showers and bathtubs in hospitals

The cleaning and disinfection of showers and bathtubs will be carried out twice a day, also using the inside out method.
As with sanitary ware, we will opt for a liquid bactericide capable of killing bacteria effectively, but of a non-corrosive nature to avoid damaging surfaces.

The material used must avoid scratches so that the scourers or other tools of great hardness will be vetoed.
Cleaning of shower screens in hospitals

It is increasingly common to replace shower curtains with screens. The first houses a smaller amount of germs and their cleaning is more comfortable than that offered by the curtains.
In this way, the screens will be sanitized twice a day with a suitable glass cleaner and using the rubbing technique.

Cleaning shower curtains in hospitals

There are showers or bathtubs that have a curtain instead of a screen. In these cases we must pay special attention to the possible appearance of black spots. These are usually mold remains inhabited by fungi.

As the curtains are in constant contact with moisture, we will clean and disinfect them whenever necessary.
In this case, we will apply bleach using the rubbing technique and rinse the shower curtain correctly.

Cleaning the floors of bathrooms in hospitals

Floors tend to be more punished than walls. Therefore, we will clean and disinfect them more frequently: twice a day.
Again, we will use the double-bucket method with a disinfectant detergent to kill as many germs as possible.

In our hygiene map in health centers you will find a summary of the products you need to ensure that the spaces are clean and free of germs.

As we highlighted in our hygiene guide for socio-health centers, cleaning and disinfection, as well as personal hygiene of both patients and technical health personnel, are basic actions to avoid the dreaded nosocomial infections.
In this article we present an infographic with the 8 articles that Papematic considers essential for hygiene in the social and health centers.
Among them, we highlight the following products, although this does not mean that there are no other equally important ones.

Hand Medic hand conditioner
Tissfil nonwoven fabric
Waste bags
Mild Foam Soap
Dosely impregnation system
Supersorb
Microdor
Purell hydroalcoholic gel

Hand Medic hand conditioner

The Hand Medic hand conditioning cream not only moisturizes the skin but also acts as a barrier against germs. This product is especially useful for sanitary technical personnel, who may suffer from dry hands after washing several times or applying products for disinfection.

Tissfil nonwoven fabric

Nonwoven fabric is the best alternative to microfiber cloths to clean surfaces and apply detergents or disinfectants. Among its main advantages, it stands out that it has a great capacity to drag and absorb and leaves no trace. In Papelmatic we have created tissfil, our own range of products for nonwoven fabric.

Waste bags

Some of the waste generated in the social and health centers, in the same way as in hospitals, is of a specific type. Therefore, they should be discarded, not only in differentiated containers, but also in specific waste bags. These are the GII bags, which are thicker than usual and are specially approved for the collection of sanitary waste.

Mild Foam Soap

The soap in Mild Foam loads stands out for being a skin-friendly soap but, above all, for presenting a composition free of dyes and aromas. This positions it as a hypoallergenic product and especially indicated for sanitary tasks, since it does not cause any type of reaction. In addition, it is highly effective against bacteria.

Dosely impregnation system

Dosely is an impregnation system that can be incorporated into cleaning trolleys. Optimizes the consumption of cleaning chemicals, as it dispenses the amount necessary to impregnate cloths or mops quickly and conveniently.

Supersorb

Supersorb is an enzyme-based compound that facilitates the collection of liquid or semi-liquid biological waste by solidification. In addition, it has natural enzymes that superficially absorbs bad odors.

Microdor

Microdor is a deodorizer that can be used in addition to Supersorb or individually. Its composition based on natural enzymes disintegrates bad odors instead of masking them, as is the case with air fresheners. In addition, it has very low levels of toxicity.

Hydroalcoholic gel

Hydroalcoholic gel eliminates 99.99% of hand germs and, best of all, does not require rinsing. What differentiates it from other hand antiseptics is that, being in gel format, it prevents dripping.

The hygiene in the presence of pets serves to guarantee our own well-being and also that of our furry ones.

Those who live with pets will know well the efforts that must be made on many occasions to keep the spaces clean.
Many complain about the excess hair that their pets give off and that they find, not only on the floor, but also in the furniture.
That is why, thousands of experts share tips to keep the spaces clean in the presence of pets.
However, all of them are shared from the human perspective. That is, to benefit the owners of pets, and very rarely take into account the effects that may have the hygiene methods used in our furry.
In this article we review the necessary guidelines to maintain the hygiene of the spaces in the presence of animals, regardless of whether it is a home or a veterinary clinic, ensuring that cleaning has the least possible impact on animals.

Avoid the most toxic chemicals
Most pets are highly sensitive to cleaning and disinfection products, which can lead to allergies or discomfort in pets.
Therefore, we will try to use ecological cleaning products or whose toxicity is minimal.
In those situations in which it is strictly necessary to use chemicals for disinfection, such as veterinary clinics, we will bet on chlorinated solutions instead of ammonia, which gives off a smell very similar to that of animal urine and May cause counterproductive effects.

Both cleaning and disinfection, in these cases, will always be carried out in the absence of pets.
Baula ecological cleaners are a very good option for cleaning in the presence of pets. Its toxicity levels are minimal and are available in different formats (floors, bathrooms, multipurpose, sanitizer, etc.).
Use wet cloths for generic cleaning
When cleaning the dust it is recommended to dispense with products such as, for example, the duster, which spreads dirt and pet hair throughout the environment.
Instead, we will use cloths or mops impregnated in wet solutions to better trap dust and avoid lifting it.
The BIO System mop is a very good option for these situations.
The non-woven fabric is the best material for mops and cleaning cloths, since it has great power to drag dirt and leaves no trace.
Rinse and dry surfaces always
So that the trace of the cleaning products is as small as possible (without minimizing their effects in terms of hygiene), it is recommended to rinse and dry the surfaces.
Thus, at the time when pets have contact with these surfaces, they will find them clean and the harmful effect that chemicals may have on them will be minimal.
In this article we also explained that drying the surfaces after cleaning helps to stop the proliferation of germs.
In addition, in the case of hairy, when we dry the surfaces, we prevent them from stepping on them and leaving traces in the rest of the space.

Be very careful with air fresheners

Some animals give off a characteristic smell that can sometimes be unpleasant.
Therefore, many people turn to air fresheners to keep the environment fresh and mask bad smells.
But let’s not forget that these products are highly toxic and can cause allergies or discomfort in some pets.
Microdor is a deodorizer made with natural enzymes that disintegrates bad odors naturally, so it has very low toxicity levels.
Finally, remember that keeping clean up to date is necessary not only to ensure our well-being, but also that of our pets.

Stainless steel is a common raw material for household products. It has many excellent properties, such as easy cleaning, not easy to rust, simple and elegant appearance, long service life, not easy to damage, corrosion and rust resistance, and very surface. Smooth and easy to clean. Stainless steel is commonly used in kitchen and bathroom making, but it is difficult to avoid dust and dirt, which can cause corrosion and rusting of stainless steel. Therefore, we need to clean the stainless steel products used in other households on a regular basis. Then, we How should the stainless steel be cleaned? Next, we will introduce several suitable methods to help you clean the stainless steel so that the stainless steel can be kept beautiful and durable.

Stainless steel cleaning tips

1. Water and cloth

For daily cleaning, you can use warm water and cloth. The stainless steel pots used in the home, if only scrubbed with detergent and rag, some stubborn but can not be completely cleaned. If you use a steel ball brush, it will leave unsightly scratches. At this time, just take some radish with the remaining radish or cucumber, scrub with a detergent, and then rinse it with water to clean it. In most cases, it is necessary to dry the surface with a towel or cloth after washing to prevent water spots. This is important because the minerals in the water will leave traces on the stainless steel.

2. Gentle cleaning agent and cloth

It can be cleaned with neutral detergent CA-Q02 and warm water so as not to damage the stainless steel. A mild neutral detergent cleans the tough dirt and wipes the dirty area with a neutral detergent. When cleaning and decontamination is complete, be sure to rinse the surface thoroughly to prevent the residue from re-staining or spotting. Naturally derived cleaning agents are biodegradable. They are missed when exposed to water, including some oils. If you clean stainless steel pots or cutlery, this is a good way to use them. The food on the cooked food can usually be removed from the pan soaked in soapy water. Use a mild sponge for washing. Because steel wool is used, it may scratch the stainless steel or leave particles, which may cause rust, so remember Rinse and dry stainless steel products.

3. Glass cleaner

Fingerprints on stainless steel surfaces are probably a headache, and can be cleaned with a glass cleaner. A microfiber cloth can be used to spray the cleaner. It can also be sprayed directly on stainless steel, but it may eventually drip or it may not waste a lot of detergent. Gently wipe the circular motion of the stainless steel area to eliminate fingerprints. Wipe as needed, then rinse thoroughly and dry with a towel.

4. Stainless steel cleaning agent

If the stainless steel products have been rusted, or there are serious oil and other impurities on the surface, it is necessary to polish the stainless steel products. The stainless steel cleaning agent CA-Q03 may be a good choice. This stainless steel cleaner (stainless steel bright cleaner) can help reduce scratches and stain removal. It also works well on stainless steel shiny surfaces. Always rinse the surface thoroughly after washing and dry or dry with a towel.

Stainless steel cleaning can be done in a variety of ways. Different stainless steel products require different cleaning methods to ensure that the texture of the stainless steel product itself is not damaged during the cleaning process, and that it can be cleaned smoothly to ensure continued use in the future. Through the above introduction, I believe that I have already had my own experience on how to clean up different stainless steel products. If you want to make your home’s stainless steel products have a longer service life, you may wish to try the above methods.

People not washing their hands after going to the toilet, rather than undercooked meat, is behind the spread of a key strain of E. coli.

That’s according to a new study published in Lancet: Infectious Diseases. In it, a team analysed 20,000 human faecal samples and 300 blood samples plus hundreds of sewage samples, animal slurry and meats including beef, pork and chicken – as well fruit and salad.

One strain – ST131 – was seen in the majority of human samples from all three sources. It is found in the gut but can, usually via urinary tract infections, cause serious infections.

However, the strains found in meat, cattle and animal slurry were mostly different.

Prof David Livermore, from the University of East Anglia’s Norwich Medical School, who led the research, said: “Critically – there’s little crossover between strains from humans, chickens and cattle.
“Rather – and unpalatably – the likeliest route of transmission for ESBL-E.coli is directly from human to human, with faecal particles from one person reaching the mouth of another.”

He said maintaining food hygiene was still important – people should handle raw meat carefully, not least because there are other strains of food poisoning bacteria that come through the food chain.
But he added: “Here – in the case of ESBL-E.coli – it’s much more important to wash your hands after going to the toilet.

“It’s particularly important to have good hygiene in care homes, as most of the severe E.coli infections occur among the elderly, and people may need help going to the toilet.”

The US Food and Drug Administration recommends surgical hand disinfection products to significantly reduce microbes on intact skin, non-irritating, broad-spectrum antibacterial effects, rapid and long-lasting effects, and common surgical hand preparation products are ethanol, chlorhexidine and Povidone iodine.

Ethanol has been used for skin disinfection for more than 150 years and is the most effective short-acting antibacterial agent, but the disadvantage is that it is flammable. In addition, its antibacterial efficacy cannot be sustained.

Kramer and other studies have shown that the effect of surgical hand disinfection with ethanol-containing disinfectant for 1.5 min is the same as that for 3 min. There is no difference in the reduction of SSI between the ethanol preparation containing the active ingredient and the water preparation, but the comparison of the first bacteria before and after the operation is found. The chlorhexidine aqueous solution is more effective than povidone iodine.

There are also studies showing that propanol-based hand sanitizers are effective 1.5 minutes after use, even exceeding the efficacy of ethanol for 3 minutes. In a nearly 10-year study of surgeons and 4387 patient cleaning and cleaning-contamination surgeries involving 6 teaching and non-teaching hospitals, brushing with 75% ethanol solution, 4% povidone iodine or 4% Chlorhexidine gluconate brushed hands, there was no statistical significance in terms of SSI rate, but ethanol brush hand was better tolerated.

Ethanol-sterilized gels are also more tolerant than soap and water-washing hands. Bibbo conducted a comparative study and found that chlorhexidine has better effect on removing skin bacteria than povidone-iodine, and chlorhexidine and ethanol have better effects.

Most studies suggest that the effect of glucose chlorhexidine is better than that of povidone iodine. The effect of brushing hands for 2~3min is better than that for brushing for 30s. It is very important to keep the disinfectant’s opponent’s face moist during the use of disinfectant to ensure that the hand disinfectant is fully applied to the various parts. The amount of the hand depends on the size of the hand and the temperature of the environment. It takes 9ml to use for an average of 3 minutes. Only 1.5ml is needed for 1.5min, so the time used is short and the amount used will be less. In addition, be sure to dry your hands thoroughly before wearing gloves, otherwise the probability of perforation of the gloves increases.
