Now, more than ever, it is essential to understand how to effectively protect yourself, your family, or even your employees from germs and infections. Unfortunately, there is quite a lot of misunderstanding about the type of cleaning we should apply. The terms cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting are sometimes used interchangeably, yet there are significant variations between them. We will help you learn the difference between cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting by exploring these terms individually.

Cleaning

Cleaning is something that most of us avoid doing, yet it is essential for maintaining our living and working spaces. To clean, you must eliminate all visible dirt, dust, and debris. Such things might detract from the appearance of your property, which is why cleaning is so important.

You typically need a cloth with some detergent, cleaning spray, or water to wipe objects down. Vacuuming is another form of cleaning.

When it comes to the types of cleaning, there are weekly cleaning routines as well as monthly and yearly ones. What you will opt for is very subjective and will depend on your habits and needs. When it comes to germs, the process of cleaning does not necessarily remove them. On the other hand, it optimizes subsequent sanitization and disinfection since it provides a clean slate.

Caption: Wiping down your plants is one form of cleaning since it removes the visible dust from them.

Alt-tag: A man wiping a plant with a cloth

Sanitizing

On the other hand, sanitizing is the process of removing a considerable number of germs until the object is safe to use. The safety level depends on what you are cleaning, such as a hospital, school, restaurant, office, or home. It is essential to adequately sanitize to stop the spread of infections. In these challenging times, sanitizing has become second nature. However, we must remain diligent in protecting others.

Sanitizing is done by using harsher products that are able to remove bacteria or germs. Read the label and wear protective gear if needed. Even getting a simple automatic sanitizer dispenser could help you and your employees maintain safety in the workplace. Remember that sanitizing does not mean the same thing as cleaning. Both are equally important for a healthy environment

Disinfecting

And finally – disinfecting. Disinfecting is one of the most reliable ways to stop the spread of infection. It can be even more beneficial than sanitizing since it kills bacteria and viruses. However, remember that it does not clean a surface or remove germs. Places that large groups of people often use should be disinfected accordingly. Your home also needs its own disinfecting routine to secure the health of you and your loved ones.

You can disinfect with harsh chemicals such as bleach and alcohol solutions. Be sure to read the label and understand which cleaning and sanitizing solutions are most appropriate. Additionally, educate yourself on how to use the disinfectant of your choice securely and effectively. Purchase any protective gear like gloves and masks while you are at it. You will most definitely need it while disinfecting your environment. Remember that disinfectants require some time to be activated, so be sure to wait until all germs have been eradicated. Disinfecting can be pretty daunting to do on your own. Hire professional help if you feel you need some assistance with this task.

Why it is important to clean, sanitize, and disinfect

We must do our due diligence to protect ourselves and others. It is essential to take care of our immediate living environment and our workspace to adequately safeguard everyone involved.

Although there is a difference between cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting, these tasks are all interdependent. You cannot possibly disinfect a messy environment. These important tasks should all be crucial in our daily, monthly, and yearly routines and should never be neglected.

You should ensure your space is clean, sanitized, and disinfected beforehand if you are planning a move, for example. Make your health and the health of your loved ones a priority by ensuring that you live in a safe and germ-free place. We understand that cleaning and disinfecting your home before and after the move might seem overwhelming. This is why you should establish a routine and seek assistance if necessary. Cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting your environment should become a joint effort between you and your family. This will lessen the load and instill good habits for your children.

How often should you clean, sanitize and disinfect

You might be asking yourself how frequently you should clean, sanitize and disinfect your place. Unfortunately, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. It depends on a number of factors, such as your routine, free time, how many people you are cleaning up after, and if you are getting any help or not. Furthermore, the location you’re in charge of may have various requirements when it comes to these factors. We hope you now understand the difference between cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting. You may devise your own ideal regimen for these tasks based on the information we provided. However, once you are done, do not forget to use hand sanitizer effectively. Cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting your environment is just half the battle. You must sanitize yourself often to protect anyone you might come in contact with.

Please note that the following comments are a very basic approach to the subject and many may disagree with my terms and definitions. This conversation is welcome and encouraged.

“Cleaning” in its most basic terms is to remove all visible soils.

“Sanitize” has to do with using a “sanitizer” or “disinfectant” to kill up to a certain percentage of microorganisms with the goal of 99.999 percent kill rate on a surface that has usually been “cleaned” prior to applying the product.

“Disinfect” has to do with using an EPA registered disinfectant on a “clean” surface for the prescribed dwell time (5 or possibly 10 minutes) with the goal of 99.9999999 percent kill rate.

“Sterilize” has to do with using an autoclave or other method with the goal of 100 percent kill rate of any microorganisms, including spores. This process is not practical is cleaning an office for obvious reasons and is limited to surgeon and dental tools that use extreme heat for total destruction of any pathogens.

“Microorganism” is any virus, bacterium, mold or other substance that is not visible to the naked eye. Also, can be called germs or pathogens.

“Pathogen” is a microorganism that can infect a person resulting in illness or even death if not treated.

“Clean surface prior to disinfecting” has to do with the reality that most sanitizers and disinfectants are not effective if there is a “soil load” (think dirt, food, grease) that must be removed before the product can be applied. Failure to clean the surface first oftentimes reduces the efficacy of the product.

Check with your distributor and make sure that you are using the correct terms to achieve the desired results.

The colder the weather, the “culprit” of the diarrhea in the autumn and winter seasons – the Norovirus, has long been raging. So, what exactly is Norovirus? How to prevent Norovirus? Gao Yan, the chief physician of the Infectious Diseases Management Office of Peking University People’s Hospital, and assistant researcher Qi Jiqiu will give a detailed explanation for everyone.

Norovirus has an acute onset, rapid spread and wide range

Norovirus, also known as Norovirus, has the characteristics of rapid onset, rapid spread, and wide range. The main symptoms are watery diarrhea, some patients may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, fever, etc. Children with vomiting are more common, diarrhea within 24 hours. As many as several times to ten times, the stool is a thin water or watery stool, no mucus and pus.

According to Gao Yan, China has an acute gastroenteritis caused by food-borne Norovirus every year. From November to March, it is a high incidence of infection, often in schools, communities, hospitals, restaurants, nurseries, nursing homes, etc. Caused a collective outbreak. Norovirus-infected diarrhea is prevalent throughout the world, and there have been large-scale outbreaks in many countries and regions such as the United States, Australia, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Sweden, and Japan.

Cutting off the route of transmission is the key to prevention

Norovirus is highly pathogenic, and more than a dozen virus particles can cause infection. It is mainly spread by water, food (such as shellfish, strawberries, lettuce, etc.) and articles contaminated by the feces of infected people, and the infection route is diversified. Because Norovirus has no lipid envelope, it is not sensitive to alcohol and detergents, chlorine-containing disinfectants (such as 84 disinfectant) and high temperatures can quickly inactivate it. In addition, most of the infectious diarrhea caused by the virus is a self-limiting disease, and there are currently no vaccines or special effects.

Cutting off the route of transmission is the main method to prevent and control Norovirus infection. In the absence of a clear source of infection, attention to personal hygiene, frequent hand washing, and not eating cold and undercooked foods can effectively reduce the probability of infection. If the source of infection (patient) is clarified, the spread of the disease can be controlled by isolating the patient, cleaning and disinfecting the environment and excretion of the patient, and paying attention to personal hand hygiene.

Maintaining hand hygiene is the most important

Qi Qiu stressed that “maintaining hand hygiene is the most important measure to prevent and control Norovirus infection.” So, what is the right time and method for washing hands?

For medical personnel, hand hygiene should emphasize “three before and after four.” The “three fronts” refer to before the patient is treated, before the cleaning or aseptic operation, before the treatment or before the meal; “four after” refers to after contact with the patient, after contact with the patient’s environment, after contact with blood, body fluids and secretions, After removing personal protective equipment.

For ordinary people, the timing of hand washing is usually before, after, after going home, after contact with garbage and animals. In the hand washing method, be careful to wash your hands with running water and soap (soap) for at least 15 seconds. In order to facilitate the memory, the steps are simply summarized as seven-character sputum: “inside-out-clip-bow-big-li-wrist”.

Generally the health of the elderly is more vulnerable. An intestinal infection or a respiratory virus can lead to more complications and a longer recovery.

80% of all infections are transmitted through the hands. Washing your hands can prevent the transmission of respiratory viruses, influenza virus, enterovirus and respiratory syncytial virus, among others, as well as gastroenteritis, hepatitis and other more serious diseases. Infections are very common in long-term care centers and represent an important cause of contagion and mortality among residents of geriatric centers.

A study published recently in the American Journal of Infection Control evaluated the impact of implementing a specific program of preventive actions with hand hygiene in nursing homes.

During the implementation of the program, health professionals took measures related to the hygiene of the hands, provided greater access to disinfecting hands through pocket bottles and new dispensers, as well as installing information screens and training programs.

The researchers evaluated the hand hygiene practices measuring the consumption of hand sanitizers and evaluating the rate of incidence of acute respiratory infections and acute gastroenteritis.

Conclusions of the study:

There was an increase in the use of hand sanitizer by health personnel during the one-year study period.

The mortality rate was significantly reduced: from 2.10 per 100 residents per month, compared to 2.65 per 100 residents per month in the control group.

Healthcare personnel also experienced lower prescriptions of antibiotics at 5 daily doses defined for 100 days resident versus the daily defined doses of 5.8 of the control group for 100 resident days.

Hospitalizations did not make a difference between the two groups.

What does it mean?

Keeping your hands clean is one of the most important steps to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. When a center implements a hand hygiene program increases the consumption of disinfectants, and in return achieves a more protected space for residents and workers, reduces costs in antibiotic treatments, avoids labor losses and improves the quality of the service.
If you plan to implement improvements with regard to accessing the hand sanitizer to your business, we advise you to choose the best options offered by the market in disinfectants with sanitary registration and dispensers.
