What is industrial hygiene?

The INSST defines industrial hygiene as the science that anticipates, identifies, assesses and controls risks that occur in the workplace or in related environments and that can put the health and well-being of workers at risk.
In other words, industrial hygiene seeks to make the “work environment” safe and healthy.
Industrial hygiene, in addition to improving the well-being of workers and, therefore, also their performance, reduces the number of sick leave that occurs due to risks at work.

What are the stages to apply industrial hygiene?

In a very summarized way, industrial hygiene follows the process shown below:

Prevention. It contemplates the configuration of the spaces and the elements that compose them. As with hygienic design, you must evaluate how to configure the professional environment in advance, this time to prevent potential risks.
ID. The next step is to identify potential hazards in the work environment.
Action. This stage aims to tackle the detected or identified risks, verify that they are not generated again and reconfigure, if necessary, the work environment.

Possible risks related to cleaning

There are multiple potential risks in the work environment, but at Papelmatic we will focus on those that can be tackled with cleaning and disinfection.

1. Different disinfectants can have a variable shelf life that can be impacted by type of water used to dilute it, temperature, exposure to light and time on the shelf.
2. RTU (ready to use) products are usually provided in an opaque bottle and oftentimes mixed with distilled or buffered water.
3. Products mixed at a dispensing station (or packets) usually use regular tap water, which can vary from site to site as to mineral content and other contaminants.
4. Most of the time, product is mixed in the same generic type, clear bottle that can be vulnerable to light.
5. It is often stored for extended periods of time resulting in reduced efficacy.
6. Dwell time (how long it takes for product to truly disinfect) varies by product.
7. The SDS and bottle label should be read/followed closely.
8. Use of clean microfiber cloths can help in removing dead or even living microorganisms from a surface thereby enhancing the final results.
9. Remember that cleaning a surface first is usually recommended since many disinfectants do not have a detergency effect and can be diminished by soil load.
10. Consult with the vendor as to shelf life after being mixed and track how workers are using the products.
11. Consulting with the vendor as to best practices and then training to that standard is very important.
12. Based on published cleaning times standards, restrooms and other aseptic cleaning areas are very low productivity which means that we need to be careful regarding cutting times to provide these services.
